Beyond Huaguo Mountain: Lianyungang's Hidden Gems Most Tourists Miss
Ancient rock carvings, a 2,000-year-old port, misty islands, and the best sunrise spot in Jiangsu. Discover the Lianyungang that guidebooks don't cover.

Kongwang Mountain: Han Dynasty Rock Carvings
Just 3km from Huaguo Mountain, Kongwang Mountain (孔望山) is possibly Jiangsu's most underrated historical site. Its cliff face contains Buddhist rock carvings dating to the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD) — some of the earliest Buddhist art in China. The carvings depict the Buddha's life, scenes from Buddhist scriptures, and even what some scholars believe is the earliest Chinese depiction of the Buddha himself.
Unlike the famous Buddhist caves of Datong or Luoyang, Kongwang Mountain receives almost no international visitors. You'll likely have these 2,000-year-old carvings to yourself. The mountain itself is a pleasant 1-hour hike with views over Lianyungang city and the sea.
Haizhou Ancient City & Lianyungang Old Port
Haizhou (海州) was Lianyungang before Lianyungang existed — a walled city dating back 2,000 years as a key port on the ancient Maritime Silk Road. Today, the restored old town area features Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture, narrow stone alleys, and traditional workshops. It's more authentic than many Chinese 'old towns' — people actually live and work here.
The old port area (连云港老街, Lianyungang Old Street) preserves early 20th-century architecture from when Lianyungang was a treaty port. The stone buildings, former customs house, and old warehouses have been converted into cafes and small museums. It's atmospheric, photogenic, and completely missed by most visitors focused solely on Huaguo Mountain.
Qin Island & Dongxi Liandao
Qin Island (秦山岛) is a small island off the Lianyungang coast, named after Qin Shi Huang (China's first emperor) who supposedly visited seeking immortality elixirs. The island features unusual rock formations shaped by millennia of wave erosion and is accessible by ferry (seasonal). Dongxi Liandao (东西连岛) is actually a peninsula connected by a causeway — two fishing villages, quiet beaches, and the best sunrise views in Jiangsu Province.
