Why Jiangsu Deserves a Full Week

Most China itineraries rush through Jiangsu — maybe a day in Nanjing, a day in Suzhou, then on to Shanghai. This is a mistake. Jiangsu Province packs more UNESCO sites, classical culture, and culinary diversity into its compact geography than almost anywhere else in China. And with high-speed trains connecting everything in under 3 hours, it's logistically easy.

This itinerary traces a path from Nanjing (imperial capital) through Suzhou (garden city) to Lianyungang (mythical mountain coast) — a journey through 2,000 years of Chinese civilization.

Days 1-2: Nanjing — Imperial Grandeur

Day 1: Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Ming Xiaoling Tomb (UNESCO), Nanjing City Wall. Evening: Confucius Temple area and Qinhuai River cruise. Day 2: Nanjing Museum (one of China's best), Presidential Palace, Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre (sobering but important). Evening: try Nanjing salted duck and duck blood soup (trust me, it's better than it sounds). Train to Suzhou in the evening (1.5 hours).

Days 3-4: Suzhou — Classical Elegance

Day 3: Humble Administrator's Garden (UNESCO), Suzhou Museum (I.M. Pei design), Pingjiang Road historic district. Evening: Kunqu Opera performance. Day 4: Tiger Hill, Lingering Garden (UNESCO), Tongli Water Town afternoon trip. Evening: Suzhou-style noodles and sweet-and-sour mandarin fish. Train to Lianyungang in the evening (3 hours).

Days 5-7: Lianyungang — Myth & Nature

Day 5: Full day at Huaguo Mountain (follow the Classic Tour itinerary). Day 6: Coast, hot springs, seafood exploration. Day 7: Haizhou Ancient City, Lianyungang Museum, final seafood feast. Depart Lianyungang — direct trains to Shanghai (2.5h), Nanjing (2h), or Beijing (4h).
