The Essentials for Every Season

These items should be in your bag regardless of when you visit: Comfortable walking/hiking shoes with good grip (stone steps can be slippery). A small daypack (20-30L is perfect). At least 1 liter of water (refill stations exist but are limited). Snacks (nuts, energy bars, fruit). Sunscreen and a hat (the summit has less tree cover). A power bank for your phone (you'll take more photos than you expect). Cash in RMB (small vendors don't always accept foreign cards on mobile payment). Tissues and hand sanitizer (bathroom situation is basic).

A lightweight rain jacket or poncho is essential even on sunny days — mountain weather changes quickly, and you'll want it for the Water Curtain Cave regardless.

Seasonal Additions

Spring (Mar-May): Light layers, windbreaker, allergy medication if you're sensitive to pollen. Summer (Jun-Aug): Extra water (2L minimum), electrolytes, insect repellent, portable fan, cooling towel, UV umbrella. Autumn (Sep-Nov): Warm layer for morning/evening, camera with a good lens (you'll want it), lip balm (autumn wind). Winter (Dec-Feb): Thermal base layer, insulated jacket, gloves, warm hat, hand warmers, thermos with hot tea (you can refill at temples).

What NOT to Bring

Don't bring a large suitcase or heavy backpack — you'll be walking up and down stone steps for hours. Skip the expensive jewelry and excessive cash. Don't bring plastic bags visibly — the monkeys associate them with food. And you don't need hiking poles unless you have knee issues — the steps are well-maintained.
