How to Get from Shanghai to Huaguo Mountain: The Complete Transport Guide (2026)

Overview: Shanghai → Lianyungang

The journey from Shanghai to Huaguo Mountain takes approximately 2.5-3 hours by high-speed train, making it a viable day trip (ambitious) or a comfortable weekend getaway. Total distance is about 480km. The key is knowing which station to depart from and which train to book.

Shanghai has three main railway stations. For Lianyungang, you want Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥) or Shanghai Station (上海站). Most departures go from Hongqiao. Lianyungang has one main station: Lianyungang Station (连云港站). Do NOT get off at Lianyungang East (连云港东) — it's farther from the mountain.

Step-by-Step Booking Process

1. Download Trip.com (formerly Ctrip) — it has an English interface and accepts foreign cards. Alternatively, use 12306.cn with translation. 2. Search for 'Shanghai Hongqiao' to 'Lianyungang'. 3. You'll see multiple daily departures from roughly 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The journey takes 2h20m-3h depending on the specific train. 4. Second class costs approximately ¥200-250. First class is ¥320-380. Business class is ¥600-700.

Book at least 3-5 days ahead for weekday travel, and 1-2 weeks ahead for weekends and holidays. Trains DO sell out, especially around Chinese holidays. E-tickets are standard — you just scan your passport at the gate. No need to pick up physical tickets.

Arriving in Lianyungang

From Lianyungang Station, you have three options: 1) Bus #10 takes you directly to Huaguo Mountain's main gate in about 30 minutes for ¥2. The bus stop is right outside the station. 2) Didi/taxi takes 20 minutes and costs ¥35-45. Show the driver: 花果山 (Huāguǒ Shān). 3) I can pick you up from the station as part of my private guide service — this is the zero-stress option, especially if it's your first time in China.

Day Trip vs. Overnight

Day trip from Shanghai is possible but tight. If you catch the 6:30 AM train, you arrive around 9 AM, can explore until 4 PM, and catch a 5-6 PM train back to Shanghai by 8-9 PM. It's a long day but totally doable. For a more relaxed experience, stay overnight in Lianyungang — hotels range from ¥150 (budget) to ¥500 (4-star), and you can also visit the coastal areas the next morning.
