Getting Around China — Trains, Didi, & Reaching Huaguo Mountain

China's transportation is world-class but can be confusing for first-timers. Here's how to navigate trains, ride-hailing, and local transport — plus detailed directions to Huaguo Mountain.

High-Speed Trains — China's Best Travel Option

China's high-speed rail network is genuinely world-class — punctual, comfortable, and extensive. Trains are the best way to travel between Chinese cities. They're faster than flying when you factor in airport transfers and security, and far more scenic.

How to Book Train Tickets

Trip.com (formerly Ctrip) is the easiest option for foreigners — English interface, accepts foreign cards, and shows all train options clearly. Download the app.

12306.cnis the official Chinese railway website. It's cheaper (no service fee) but the English version is limited and payment with foreign cards can be tricky. For most travelers, Trip.com is worth the small service fee.

Book 1-2 weeks ahead for popular routes, especially during Chinese holidays (Spring Festival, Golden Week in October) when trains sell out completely. For off-peak travel, booking 2-3 days ahead is usually fine.

Train Classes & Seat Types

Second Class

2+3 seating

Comfortable, spacious. Comparable to premium economy on a plane. ¥150-300 Shanghai→Lianyungang.

First Class

2+2 seating

Wider seats, more legroom. ¥250-500. Worth it for journeys over 3 hours.

Business Class

2+1 seating

Fully reclining seats, lounge access. ¥500-1,000. Luxurious but overkill for most trips.

At the Station

Train stations in China are large and airport-like. Arrive 30-45 minutes early. You'll need your passport to enter (ticket is linked to your passport number). Security is similar to airports — bags go through X-ray, you walk through a metal detector. Signs are in Chinese and English at major stations. Look for your train number on the departure board, then find the correct gate (检票口).

Didi — China's Uber (with English Now!)

Didi (滴滴出行) is China's version of Uber and is the most convenient way to get around cities. The app now has an English interface and accepts foreign credit cards — a huge improvement from past years.

Download Didi from your app store before arriving. Set it up with your phone number and link your card. A ride across Lianyungang city costs ¥20-50. DiDi is also the best way to get from Lianyungang train station to Huaguo Mountain (about 30 minutes, ¥40-60).

Didi Tips

  • The app has a built-in messaging system with auto-translate — you can communicate with drivers in English
  • Always check the license plate matches before getting in
  • Fares are fixed upfront — no haggling or surprise charges
  • Didi works in Lianyungang, but fewer cars than in megacities — expect 3-5 minute waits
  • For early morning Huaguo Mountain visits, pre-book a Didi the night before

Local Transport in Lianyungang

Lianyungang doesn't have a metro system (yet), but its bus network is extensive and covers all major destinations. The most important bus for visitors:

Bus #10 — Direct from Lianyungang city center to Huaguo Mountain scenic area. Takes about 30 minutes. Fare: ¥2. Runs from approximately 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM. The bus stop at the mountain is right at the main entrance.

Buses in Lianyungang cost ¥1-2 per ride. You can pay by scanning the Alipay bus QR code (switch your Alipay location to Lianyungang first) or with exact change. Route numbers are displayed in Arabic numerals at bus stops, but route details are typically Chinese-only.

Taxis

Traditional taxis are available but Didi is generally easier and ensures fair pricing. If you take a street taxi, make sure the meter is running (starting fare ¥8). Most taxi drivers in Lianyungang don't speak English — have your destination in Chinese characters ready to show them.
