Autumn at Huaguo Mountain: Golden Leaves, Crystal Skies & the Best Hiking of the Year

The Golden Season

Ask any local in Lianyungang when to visit Huaguo Mountain, and they'll tell you autumn. September through November is what I call the 'golden window' — warm days, cool nights, almost no rain, and visibility that stretches all the way to the Yellow Sea. Temperatures are perfect for hiking (15°C–25°C / 59°F–77°F), and the summer crowds have gone home.

October, in particular, is magical. The mountain's deciduous trees — maples, ginkgos, and persimmons — turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. The contrast against the dark green pines and the blue autumn sky is genuinely breathtaking.

Best Photography Conditions of the Year

Photographers, this is your season. The combination of low humidity and autumn air clarity means you can see — and photograph — the Yellow Sea from Jade Girl Peak. That view is only visible on about 30-40 days per year, and most of them are in autumn. The golden hour light (especially 4-5 PM in October) bathes the mountain in warm tones that make every shot look like a painting.

The Nine-Dragon Bridge area is the epicenter of autumn color. The ginkgo trees along the stream turn pure gold, and their fallen leaves create a yellow carpet that's become a popular photo spot. Morning mist in the valleys (common in October mornings) adds an ethereal quality to wide landscape shots.

Hiking Conditions & Routes

Autumn is the only season where I recommend the full hike up (rather than cable car). The temperature stays comfortable throughout the day, and the trail surface is dry and grippy. The complete loop — up the hiking trail, across the ridge, down past the temples — takes about 5-6 hours at a relaxed pace.

For an unforgettable experience, time your visit during the Mid-Autumn Festival (usually September/October). The mountain hosts a moon-viewing event, and you can try mooncakes while watching the full moon rise over the peaks. The National Day holiday (October 1-7) brings big crowds, so plan for mid-October through November if you want solitude.
